Why might a root canal be needed?

Inside every tooth is a soft tissue called the pulp, which contains nerves and blood vessels. If this tissue becomes infected or inflamed, it can cause significant discomfort and, if left untreated, may lead to abscess formation or tooth loss. Root canal treatment may be recommended if you experience:

Persistent or severe toothache
Sensitivity to hot or cold that lingers
Swelling or tenderness around a tooth
Pain when biting or chewing
Deep decay, cracks or trauma to a tooth

What does root canal treatment involve?

Root canal treatment removes the infected tissue from inside the tooth, thoroughly cleans and disinfects the root canals, and then seals them to prevent reinfection. The tooth is then restored to protect it and allow it to function normally again.

The procedure is carried out under local anaesthetic and is usually no more uncomfortable than having a filling.

A careful, step-by-step approach

Assessment and diagnosis
Your dentist will examine the tooth and take X-rays to confirm the diagnosis and plan treatment appropriately.

Treatment
The infected pulp is removed, the canals are cleaned and sealed, and the tooth is stabilised. In some cases, treatment may be completed over more than one visit.

Restoration
Following root canal treatment, the tooth often requires a crown or protective restoration to restore strength and prevent fracture. Your dentist will discuss the most suitable option for your tooth.

If you are experiencing tooth pain or have been advised that you may need root canal treatment, our team is here to help.
